A seductive warm-climate expression of Syrah that shows deep red fruit from a storied vineyard.

Picked riper than our other expressions of Syrah, this is some true California big boy Rhone-style juice. Luckily it's without all of the manipulated nastiness that plagues that style of wine in California. One might say this wine has a lot of chutzpah. It's built for cold nights around the fireplace and hearty meals. Sometimes it’s great to hunker down with a big ole glass of powerful red wine to warm you up - here's our rendition….

Pro tip: Goes with the type of food that makes you think of log cabins, cooking over open flames or in cast iron, antlers mounted on a wall, bear skin rugs, you get the picture...

Varietal - 100% Syrah

Vineyard - In 2016, Kurt Gollnick and Janet Rodgers purchased Antle Vineyard from their longtime friends and renamed it Rodnick.Farm (a portmanteau of their last names). It is farmed hyper-organically. Kurt and Janet’s crew sprays nothing but oils in the vineyard. Planted in the legendary Chalone AVA adjacent to Pinnacles National Park, the soils are made up of granite and limestone. A long way from water and civilization, you cross some incredible terrain to arrive at this vineyard site.

Sitting at 1800 feet in elevation, you can see both the Monterey and San Francisco Bays from this vineyard which gives the otherwise warm site a little marine influence to temper the heat. We’re lucky to work with such an experienced viticulturist in Kurt. His knowledge and passion shine through in the meticulous work in his own vineyard.

Method - The fruit is picked on the riper side for our style as these soils aid in retaining naturally high acidity. This gives us the ability to push ripeness without risking a fat or cloying wine. Using 50% whole clusters, cap management is a combination of pigeage and pumpovers for 50 days on the skins. The extended maceration lengthens tannin chains, making the tannins coat your palate in a silky fashion rather than attack in a course fashion so this wine feels very polished although there are no additions.

Unfined, unfiltered and untouched. No sulfur is harmed in the making of this wine - 173 cases produced / 13.8% Alcohol.
