*New Release!* 2018 Poor Ranch "Moon Juice" Carbonic Red Wine
Grapes: 70% Zinfandel, 30% Syrah
Vineyard: Poor Ranch (certified organic, dry farmed). The Poor family has homesteaded this rugged land since 1888. They tend to 1,000+ acres, over 200 of which host wine grapes. The current generations (Susan, John Sr., & John Jr.) work the expansive, steep-sloped property without outside help, aided only by a small amount of livestock. they’re farming some of the most sought-after fruit in northern CA!
AVA: Mendocino, high in the Hopland hills.
Vines: The Poors implore a very hands off approach - no irrigation, no chemicals, no sprinkler system, no fans for frost protection. Vines are head pruned with no wires or trellises. The Syrah comes from one of the higher blocks called “The Point,” and these grapes come from A section therein called “the first Pass.” The Zinfandel is farmed in a block dubbed “Quily’s.”
Method: Syrah and Zin are left whole cluster in separate vessels and undergo carbonic maceration for a month. They are then pressed into stainless, then racked once to blend following primary fermentation. After 4 months elevage in stainless, the finished wine is bottled unfined, unfiltered, and without the addition of SO2.
ABV: 12.5%. Though visually darker in color and expressing more structure on the palate than some of the glouglou that you may be used to, this wine still satisfies that urge for a quaffable, sprightly red. Put a little chill on your bottle and it’ll have you bouncing into outer space.
